DM Book Review

 Dark Matter Book Review

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch follows a man by the name of Jason, who is our main lead, throughout his mind bending multi-dimensional journey to save his family. Jason Dessen is a professor at Lakemont community college.  He lives in a brownstone in the Logan Square neighborhood. He lives with his wife of 15 years, Daniela, and their 14-year-old son, Charlie. Jason had ambitious dreams, but he decided to give up on them to take care of his family. He has much very difficult decisions, but in the end, he is contempt. But that all changes on one night while he was going to get ice cream. Jason is suddenly attacked by a man in a white geisha mask and is interrogated by him. After being interrogated by the man, they arrive at Cago Powers and the last thing Jason remembers before losing conscience, is the man injecting the both of them with something. Jason wakes up strapped to a gurney and this is where he starts his mind bending journey through multiple dimensions.

In Dark Matter, I enjoyed the importance of family and Jason’s fight to save them. It reminded me of Denny and the fight for his family. The connection that the two had with their families, empowered them to push through even further. The connection between Jason and Daniela was perfectly shown when she said, “I think I’m saying we found each other.” Pg 318. That was important because Daniela changed Jason’s view on the situation. The love they had for each other was not capable of being replaced by some “other” version of Jason. It was a bond that only the two of them shared. The conversation that the two of them had made me appreciate the bonds I share with my loved ones. The bonds we share are all unique and different because we ourselves are all unique and different.

Another aspect of the novel that I enjoyed was the science fiction. Ive always enjoyed science fiction and the ideas that people have of it. Reading Dark Matter was the first time I’ve heard of Schrödinger’s cat, and I was really impressed by its implication in the novel. Blake Crouch did a great job on not overusing it and not making the novel all about it. The science fiction did not veer away from the true meaning of the book. It was in great balance. The originality of the multi-dimensional travel take by Crouch was amazing as well. Especially due to the fact that it published almost a decade ago.

Blake Crouch’s Dark Matter is a great book for high school readers and above. The take on multi-dimensional travel is really interesting. The principles on family and the love you have for your family are very meaningful throughout the book. My favorite part of the book is that the connections we share with someone are uniquely different than what we would have with another person. And the events we go through together strengthens that connection between the two of us. The book is really good at showing the reader how strong love is and how far a person is willing to go for love. Dark Matter is a great all-around book fit for any reader.
